Bundaberg mum helps others in need

Posted on December 7, 2011

Another purchase which will greatly help mothers needing to stay with their babies on the paediatric ward at Bundaberg Hospital has been purchased.

Leigh East and Tom Head from Sunrise Rotary try out the new chair on the ward.

Bundaberg mother Leigh East, together with Sunrise Rotary and the Bundaberg Health Services Foundation have bought a new breastfeeding chair for use on the ward.

Ms East, who lost her son Exavier last year, has been working towards this goal for 12 months and achieved it by gaining donations from family and friends and selling raffle tickets for Sunrise Rotary which matched her fundraising efforts.

Ms East said that while she was in the paediatric ward with Exavier she found it very difficult to breastfeed him on a normal chair or the fold-out bed she often slept on in his room.

“The facility is wonderful and so is the team but this chair will help eleviate the extra stress for other mothers that may find themselves in hospital with their child.’’ Mrs East said.

“I had hoped to raise enough for two but this is a great start.’’
